With help and technology from Solar City and Tesla, the island of Ta'u in American Samoa is kicking diesel-generated electricity for solar and independence.
The 1.4-megawatt installation, which includes solar panels and Tesla Powerwall batteries, can store enough electricity to serve the islands 600 people for three days. Yet it only takes 7 hours of tropical sunlight to fully recharge the batteries.
For now, the island still has diesel generators for backup, but it seems they've become redundant.
This installation is a great case study for small, isolated towns, on islands or not.
