Indonesian Recycles Rubber Trees into Bicycles

Old rubber trees are normally burned, releasing CO2 into the atomosphere. But Indonesian Didi Diarsa Aldiana has started using the old trees for bicycle frames instead.

“Unproductive rubber trees, which do not produce latex anymore, can actually be used as the basic material for bicycles. However, many rubber farmers do not know this and choose to burn such trees instead,” said Didi to The Jakarta Post. “Burning trees means increasing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. It eventually harms the environment.”

Recycling the rubber wood also saves the resources that would have gone into a metal or carbon fiber frame. And it also makes you wonder what could be made with other unproductive orchard trees ...

Didi's beautiful Kayuh wooden bikes sell for about 380 USD, but the supply is limited and probably not available outside Indonesia. However, you can buy bamboo bicycles widely today.
