The expansion of palm oil plantations has contributed to vast swaths of tropical deforestation. But seven African nations are protecting their forests, even as they expand production to meet regional demand.
In collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Central African nations, including Cameroon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon, are ensuring that their palm oil development are sustainable and inclusive. This will protect forests, biodiversity, and the human community.
Palm oil is one of the world's most important plant oils, comprising 38 percent of global vegetable oil consumption. It's used in food, cosmetics, household detergents, and more.
